En el pueblo de Tayahua un pequeo hurfano de nombre Valerio logra escapar de la tutela del cura del pueblo. Al salir de la iglesia participa en una rifa que el paletero lleva a cabo en la plaza del pueblo. Valerio se saca la carta del Siete de Copas y gana la rifa, Al crecer Valerio se dedica al juego de la baraja de pueblo en pueblo, siempre conservando la carta que se sac en la rifa ya que esta se ha convertido en su amuleto, trayndole suerte. Valerio pierde por primera vez con Mauro, un joven de Cocula que ha llegado al pueblo a enfrentar su yegua con los caballos de Valerio. Las cosas se complican de ah en adelante porque ambos se enamoran de la misma joven, de nombre Rosa. Small-town orphan boy Valerio runs away from his guardian, the local priest. As he leaves the church, he enters a raffle, draws a card the Seven of Goblets and wins the raffle. As a grown man, Valerio goes from town to town playing cards, always keeping the card he drew in the raffle with him as his lucky charm. Valerio loses for the first time to Mauro, a young man who has come to town to race his mare against Valerio's horses. From then on, things get even worse, as both men fall in love with the same woman.
